SCORP Outdoor Recreation and Tourism Partnerships Regional Forums

Based on direction from the Steering Committee, the primary recommendation of the 2003 SCORP was to develop Outdoor Recreation and Tourism Partnerships Regional Forums:

 

“Regional forums should be convened to develop collaborative strategies among communities with common interests, tourism business operators, non-profit organizations, and the public lands managers responsible for delivering the outdoors experiences visitors desire.”

 

To implement this goal, two pilot regional forums were conducted in 2004 in the North Front Range and the Southwest.  Based on an assessment of communities with common interests, the two regions were defined and selected as pilot projects:

1) Archuleta, San Juan, La Plata, Montezuma, and Dolores Counties in the Southwest

2) Larimer and Weld Counties, as well as Longmont and Lyons, in the North Front Range

 

Representatives from federal and state public, community recreation and open space agencies, local government officials, regional planning organizations, land trusts, youth corps organizations, non-profit organizations, chambers of commerce, tourism businesses, and outdoor retailers convened for two three-hour work sessions over a three-month period.  Regional forum participants discussed existing partnerships and potential collaborations and selected five high-priority projects to cooperatively pursue in each region.  In addition, participants also decided to continue convening periodically to facilitate collaboration among stakeholders.

2007 Southeast Regional Forums

Building upon the successes in the Southwest and the North Front Range Tourism and Recreation Forums, Colorado State Parks conducted an additional series of Forum meetings in the Southeast region of the state in 2007.  The Southeast Colorado Regional Tourism & Outdoor Recreation Partnership Forums sought to help regional stakeholders develop cooperative approaches for providing high-quality outdoor recreation and tourism opportunities in the six counties centered along Highway 50: Crowley, Otero, Bent, Kiowa, Prowers, and Baca.  Engaging recreation and tourism stakeholders in the regional forums was an important implementation component of the 2003 Statewide  Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan.

 

Colorado State Parks partnered with the Southeast Colorado Regional Heritage Task Force (SECORHT) in conducting the Southeast regional forums.  Forums were conducted in June, September, and December.   Over the course of several months local issues and needs were identified and prioritized, and strategies were developed to facilitate solutions to the region’s unique challenges.  The efforts of the Southeast Colorado Regional Tourism & Outdoor Recreation Partnership Forums culminated in the January 2008 release of the Southeast Colorado Regional Tourism and Outdoor Recreation Strategic Outdoor Recreation Plan.
