Highline Lake State Park
Ice Fishing at Mack Mesa Lake

An oasis in the desert, Highline Lake is the recreation epicenter for the Grand Valley with two lakes, lush grass, trails and trees.
No matter the season, Highline Lake State Park is a diverse and welcome retreat. Connected to miles of trails and close to communities, the park makes an ideal base camp for exploring the Grand Junction area.  Whether passing through on mountain bikes, or as an end destination, the park welcomes campers, anglers, families and groups.

Birders have plenty to see here. The Audubon Society designated the park an important bird area; thousands migrate through the area every winter.

Why Visit Now

The ice on Highline Lake is disappearing quickly, and the northwest corner is ICE-FREE!
Currently, the only accessible,  fishable ice on Highline is the southwest corner of the lake, near the dam.  There are no recent reports of any fish caught there; the ice in that corner of Highline Lake may soon be unstable.
The ice on the rest of Highline Lake is totally unstable, and unsafe.  USE EXTREME CAUTION if you go onto the ice!
 See our conditions page!

We strive to have up-to-date lake and park conditions posted.  Please let us know if something needs to be updated.

What happened  to Winter?

Ice fishing is still great at Mack Mesa for stocker-sized trout, but ONLY near the pier at the southeast corner of the lake.  USE CAUTION!

The scenery at Highline changes constantly!
Bring a camera and take a short hike along one of the trails.  Depending on the time of day  and the weather, you might see a few of our large deer herd - 4-point bucks, does and little ones.  Or maybe our resident geese and ducks floating blissfully on the open water of  Highline Lake. Or a sunset or sunrise creating awesome colors, shadows and views, and changing minute by minute!  Get outdoors at Highline Lake and see what you can see!

If Winter is really gone, shall we start looking forward to Spring?

Is winter still here?
Mack Mesa Lake is opening up!  Only the southeast corner near the pier still has fishable ice.  However, use extreme caution if going onto Mack Mesa ice!!

Fishing is reported to be awesome for stockers - use jigs, not bait!

The ice skating rink at Mack Mesa is quickly being slurped up by open water!  NO MORE SKATING AT MACK MESA - it isn't safe!

ALWAYS USE CAUTION
ON OR NEAR ANY LAKE ICE
 - it may be very dangerous!
