Lake Pueblo Construction Update

Water Renovation Project:

The second phase of the water renovation (on the south side) is winding down.

While construction completion dates are always a moving target, the project is on schedule and will most likely be complete in mid to late April.

Arkansas Point is closed because it is part of the renovation. It will definitely open May 1. If the construction is completed early and the facilites are ready, we may be able to open it sooner. We will post the opening date on this conditions page when we know what it is.

The following is important information regarding the construction:

  • There will be trail closures throughout the project.
    • Water Tower Trail is closed
    • Access to Hooter's Canyon and Conduit Trails will not be available from Water Tower
    • Heavy equipment will be moving up and down Water Tower, use extreme caution on the trails near the construction area.
    • Intermittent closures to the paved trail may be necessary throughout the project.
  • Watch for workers and heavy equipment moving throughout the south side of the park.
  • There will be intermittent water availability on the south side during the next several months.

Southern Colorado Delivery System (SDS)

Construction is under way on the Southern Delivery System (SDS), including at Pueblo Dam where the project begins. SDS is a regional project to transport water from the Arkansas River to the city of Colorado Springs, the Pueblo West Metropolitan District, the city of Fountain, and the Security Water District.

To keep the public safe during construction, river and trail access is closed on the north and south shores of the river near the Juniper Road Bridge upstream to the face of the dam. Park visitors are asked to please comply with informative signs advising recreationalists about the closure boundaries.

For your convenience, click here for a map of the closed area.  River access and trail closures are in effect beginning in May 2011 and may last well into 2013. Visit www.SDSwater.org for the latest information.

Activities will be closely coordinated with State Parks, Colorado Division of Wildlife, and Bureau of Reclamation staffs to make sure the agencies and park patrons are kept informed about work activities. During these activities, environmentally responsible construction practices are being used to preserve watershed quality.

Please check back often for the latest updates on these and other projects.
