Comanche Grassland Lesser Prairie Chicken

Comanche Lesser Prairie Chicken Natural Area

Location: Baca County
Size: 9210 acres
Designated: 1987
Land Manager: U.S. Forest Service

This Comanche National Grassland site contains prime habitat for the Lesser Prairie Chicken as well as the largest concentration of leks (mating display grounds) for the Lesser Prairie Chicken in Colorado. The dense sandsage community on the site provides critical habitat for this state-listed threatened species. The area is a good example of coordinated natural resource management to meet the goals for which National Grasslands were established. Range and wildlife habitat management on the area are closely coordinated to increase and maintain habitat productivity.
